One More Thing

Forgot to mention that the Bonanza pot stands at $712. If the 16 people we expect to show are at the Bonanza, that means the prize pool that will be at stake is going to be approximately $1,070. Remember, the Bonanza buy-in is $25, not the usual $22. The extra $3 per person will go toward trophy, drink, etc.

Randall Sweeps, 52 Irving Poker Bonanza Standings Set

On Conference Championship/De La Hoya vs PacMan Saturday, 52 Irving Poker League held events number 51 and 52 of the season, likely to be the final events before the year-end Bonanza. The first event was a 5-man tourney won by Randall, and C-Lees got his first career cash... but the total number of players left Greg Dohmann at 47 AB for the year. That's 3 AB short of what is necessary for Bonanza qualification, so the group rallied late and decided to go with the double dip. And around 4:30 AM, Randall took that event down as well. Now we have 18 qualifiers for Sunday's Bonanza. Here are the extended standings, note the 4 wins for Randall when he had zero entering the month of November. He's getting hot at the right time. Below are the extended standings for the players that have qualified, with the numbers for non-qualifiers below them. Also, I've put below the standings the percentage of the chips that people will be starting the Bonanza with:

Name, BA, H-AB, Wins, Cashes

1) Vida, .859, 61-71, 4, 7
2) Clutch, .855, 218-255, 12-20
3) J-Mac, .744, 212-285, 8, 17
4) Kenton, .696, 55-79, 2, 4
5) Paul, .681, 47-69, 2, 3
6) Yinz, .679, 108-159, 3, 6
7) Randall, .675, 108-160, 4, 8
8) Willis, .667, 164-246, 5, 8
9) Vince, .643, 101-157, 4, 7
10) Bearman, .629, 78-124, 1, 6
11) Ketaineck, .580, 83-143, 1, 6
12) Edge, .558, 111-199, 1, 4
13) D-Rose, .534, 38-73, 2, 2
14) Dohmann, .453, 24-53, 1, 2
15) Nick, .439, 25-57, 1, 1
16) Fallica, .431, 31-72, 1, 1
17) C-Lees, .420, 42-100, 0, 1
18) Harry, .277, 18-65, 0, 0

Non-Qualifiers:
McKean, .630, 17-27, 0, 2
McCrystal, .611, 22-36, 0, 1
Elias, .541, 20-37, 0, 2
Lundblad, .417, 5-12, 0, 0
Stu, .150, 3-20, 0, 0

Unfortunately, we will be missing Kenton and Matty K. for the Bonanza. So the following math is if all the other 16 qualifiers sit down for the Bonanza. There will be a total of 9,544 chips in play.

Percentage of Chips Held at Start of Bonanza

Vida: 9.00%
Clutch: 8.96%
J-Mac: 7.80%
Paul: 7.14%
Yinz: 7.11%
Randall: 7.07%
Willis: 6.99%
Vince: 6.73%
Bearman: 6.59%
Edge: 5.85%
D-Rose: 5.60%
Dohmann: 4.75%
Nick: 4.60%
Fallica: 4.52%
C-Lees: 4.40%
Harry: 2.90%

So there it is. See you all on Sunday for the first Bonanza in 52 Irving history...

The Monster Mash

Let me tell you...it was a graveyard smash. Yes, nine 52 Irving Poker League members gathered Halloween night for a night full of spooks, ghouls and flops. Unfortunately, we didn't really take notes, because, in the words of Rick James, "Sorry Charlie, I was having too much fun."

A couple key hands. Early on, Randall was all-in with pocket 3's against Yinz pocket aces. Both flopped set, Randall picked up a Kamalakin-Makin draw on the turn, but hit the 4th 3 on the river to stave off elimination and put a big hit on Yinz stack.

The two big stacks battled 4-handed, as Willis pushed all-in with the nut straight and got a call from C-Lees and his pair of aces. Willis doubled up to a monster chip stack.

It got down to heads-up behind Small Market Love members, Yinz and Willis. Rumors of a feud were denied, and the two played a gentlemenly game of poker. Willis's K-Q outdrew Conlon's medium ace when Conlon was all-in pre-flop for his 5th win of the season.

Anyways, here's the finishing order, points are out of 9 at-bats.

9th: J-Mac (1 pt)
8th: Clutch (2 pts)
7th: Harryhoa (3 pts)
6th: Matty K (4 pts)
5th: Vinny Masil (5 pts)
4th: C-Lees (6 pts)
3rd: Randall (8 pts; 7 + 1 for cash)
2nd: Yinz (9 pts; 8 + 1 for cash)
1st: Willis (11 pts; 9 + 1 for cash + 1 for win)

Friday Night Recap

Hello folks,

In lieu of an actual recap, I will give you all you need to know: Scott Randall took down his first 52 Irving event. Playing from a position of power all night, and with his lovely fiance in attendance, Randall stayed in the chip lead for much of the evening and took it down. Congrats to him.

Now for some housekeeping. The standings and updates have been somewhat lacking lately, so it will all be caught up now. The standings to the right are done, and the Bonanza Pot total is fully updated, as we went over the $600 mark on Friday night to a total of $610.

Curly Howard 105

A sparse crowd of 5, the league-mandated minimum for a sanctioned 52 Irving event, gathered on Wednesday morning for The Curly Howard 105. Chips were flying early in the tourney, as Harry Dang tried to make a move on the first hand when dealt a pair of pocket Queens. But he ultimately ceded the pot to J-Mac and spent much of the remainder of his tournament trying to rebuild his stack. After dropping a few more big hands, HD got involved in the wrong hand with Kenton Wong, a hand that would end his day prematurely. After a flop of AAQ, a short-stacked Harry was all-in against Kenton. Kenton flipped A8 to Harry's pocket 5's, and Harry's fate was cemented. To add insult to injury, Kenton caught an 8 on the river, giving him a boat and sending Harry to a 5th-place exit. Rather than picking up lunch, as the tourney had started not too long ago, Harry gamely offered to deal, an offer which was gladly accepted. Next, Kenton turned his sights on Vida. After a flop of 3Q9, Kenton made a small bet into Vida, eliciting a call. The turn brough a 7 and two checks. A king fell on the river and Kenton pushed all-in. Vida quickly called and sheepishly flipped over AK for Kings, one better than Kenton's queens (Q5). Kenton, however, rallied nicely, accepting an invitation from Clutch to join him for a day at Foxwoods. After surviving several all-in scenarios, 9 by his count, David Bearman would be the next to go. Shortstacked by a significant margin, Bearman moved all-in preflop with K10. Vida called with A9. The flop came A10J and the turn and river brought blanks, eliminating Bearman in 3rd place. Starting heads up play against J-Mac, Vida held a chip lead of nearly 4-1. Shortly after the tourney had been narrowed to 2, Vida pushed all-in from the small blind and was called. He flipped A4 and J-Mac turned over K10. The board fell 68357, giving Vida a straight on the river, that, although meaningless, is perhaps appropriate given his streak of good luck lately. Vida has now won 4 of his last 5 tournaments entered and finished in 2nd place in the other. The next event will be held Friday at 8 ET. Please join the gentlemen of 52 Irving for the Jackie Robinson Memorial.

Points Earned (out of 5):
Harry Dang: 1 point
Kenton Wong: 2 points
David Bearman: 3 points
Jason McCallum: 5 points (4 for 2nd, 1 for cash)
Jason Vida: 7 points (5 for 1st, 1 for win, 1 for cash)

The Marshall Mathers Classic - October 17

October 17, 2008

The Marshall Mathers Classic

9 players turned out for a Friday night card game two weeks prior to Halloween – here’s how the action unfolded…

9th place (1 point): Harry was crippled when he turned an ace-high flush but J-Mac caught a full house on the river. Harry was left with one chip and he went out on his next hand for an early exit…

8th place (2 points): Next to go out was research’s tallest man, Greg… Dohmann went all in with pocket queens but was knocked out by C-Lees who paired his king on the flop and then got trips on the river.

Kings were kind to C-Lees all night, as shortly thereafter he was dealt pocket kings on back-to-back hands, and he doubled up each time when he hit a set on the board.

7th place (3 points): Newly engaged Scott Randall was next to fall, as he re-raised Clutch all-in and Clutch was priced in with 4 hearts after the flop. The turn brought another heart and Randall was done. Fortunately for the rest of us, his fiancĂ© showed up to give him shit about it. The C-Lees response to Randall’s loss? “I would have immediately gone out and gotten a 22-year old…”

6th place (4 points): C-Lees luck ran out with his face-card pocket pairs… he had queens and after an A-2-8 flop, Matt K. bet 100 and C-Lees went all-in. Ketaineck called with A-2 and the rest of the cards came up empty for the newly minted R-3.

5th place (5 points): Next to the rail was 52 Irving resident Matty Willis who was shortstacked and pushed all-in with pocket 2’s… Clutch looked down at pocket queens and made an easy call. No help came and Willis was gone.

4th place (6 points): Former poker player Paul Carr made a return to 52 Irving and showed no signs of rust from his long, graveyard-shift-induced layoff… but his luck ran out when his all-in for 842 chips with pocket queens was called by Ketaineck’s A-8… it wasn’t the Ace that did it, but a 6 on the turn gave Matty the straight to knock Paul out in a very respectable return to the table.

3rd place (7 points + 1 for cash): 3 players cashed in this nine-man event, and 3-handed poker lasted for a while, but soon Clutch found himself the shorter stack and he pushed all-in with 8-9 and was called by Ketaineck’s A-9. The flop brought a 9 and the river an ace, giving Matty aces up and giving Clutch the 8 points and $20.

2nd place (8 points + 1 for cash): On the first hand of heads up, J-Mac was dealt pocket aces and he checked them pre-flop. The flop was 10-J-2 and when J-Mac checked, Ketaineck went all-in with J-Q. A quick call and no improvement on the turn or river gave J-Mac the 2-1 chip lead. A lot of chips moved around for about 45 minutes, but finally J-Mac caught A-K of hearts and Matty made an all-in move with 10-2 and was called. An ace on the flop gave J-Mac a commanding chip lead, and when he was dealt A-K of hearts on the very next hand, it was over when he caught 3 more hearts to win the event, his first win in well over 2 months.

1 point - Dang
2 points - Greg
3 points - Randall
4 points - Lees
5 points - Willis
6 points - Carr
8 points - Clutch
9 points - Matt K.
11 points - J-Mac

The David Lee Roth Experience - October 10

The first of what we hope to be many Friday night editions of the 52 Irving Poker League (still seeking sponsorship for the 2009 season) took place with the long-waited return of the first SC Live segment producer to sit at the felt, David Rose.
Unfortunately, D-Rose's night wouldn't last too long. First he lost about half of his stack when his ace-high flush ran into the full house (5's full) of Matt Ketaineck. Not long after, with the blinds still at 2-4, with a board of A-5-A, Kevin "All-Yinz" Conlon bet, D-Rose went all in, prompting a fold from Jason McCallum. D-Rose made the call with A-10 for a set, but Yinz showed pocket 5's for the flopped boat. The second edition of 5's full was enough to send D-Rose home in 6th place.
D-Rose stuck around, the jokes were flying, but the chips remained somewhat stationary at this point. The storyline at this point was split between Matty K not remembering the name of the Dog on the Jetson (Rover, seriously?) and the what-could've-beens for Brett Edgerton.
Edge got a walk in the big blind, and per table rules, flipped over 4-5 of diamonds. Edge would've turned a straight flush on the hand. Later, Edge had Matty K all-in and dominated with K-Q against K-4 of hearts. However, a straight on the board gave Matty K a new chance at life.
Yinz was the second player to be eliminated from the tournament, as his A-Q couldn't catch up to Matt Willis's cowboys. The two denied rumors that their fantasy sports relationship was in trouble, but in the end it was Willis eliminating the other half of Iranian Hercules in 5th.
The blinds got up to 40-80 with 4 players still remaining. Ketaineck pushed all-in, and it was only 69 more for J-Mac to make the call. He did so sheepishly with 8-6 of hearts, but had live ones against A-10. The flop (9-5-8) gave J-Mac the lead, and the turn (6) gave him two pair, but left Matty K with 4 outs to a straight. But the miracle straight couldn't come again, and Ketaineck went home in 4th.
Now 3-handed, the action was hot despite playing on the money bubble. Finally, Willis raised from the button, J-Mac folded, and Edge called for less. Willis had A-2 of hearts, Edge, thinking he had at least 2 live ones, disappointedly turned over 10-2 suited. Even Doyle Brunson couldn't have helped Edge, though, as the board failed to give him spades or a 10, and he went out in 3rd.
The tournament was a lengthy one, especially for 6 players, but heads-up definitely trimmed that time down. Perhaps feeling the revenge of Mr. Gurgles, J-Mac pushed all-in on the first hand into the monster chip stack of Willis. Willis immediately called with pocket jacks, but had a coin flip against J-Mac's K-Q of hearts.
A non-threatening flop of 2-A-9 kept Willis out front. A jack on the turn gave Willis a set, but only trimmed J-Mac's outs from 6 to 4. But the 3 gave Willis his 4th 52 Irving Poker title of the season.

September 8th Recap

Chips flew fast and furiously at 52 Irving on Monday night, as six hopefuls, who all entered the night in the top 11 in the official 52 Irving poker rankings, vied for the tournament's top prize. Despite constant glances over the shoulder to monitor Ryan Grant's rushing yardage or bemoan the sad state of the Raiders defense, the event was not without its share of high-quality play and great hands.

The 1st all-in scenario of the night provided the latter, as a short-stacked Clutch called Willis' pre-flop raise, putting himself all-in. When Willis flipped A9, Clutch (910h) was nearly inconsolable, bemoaning that he had figured he would be behind, but at least have two live cards. The flop came 88J with two hearts, giving Clutch an open-ended straight flush draw. The turn brought the 7 of hearts, and Clutch escaped with a miracle straight flush.

With Clutch's impressive return from the abyss, David Bearman was the next player to see his stack dwindle. From the small-blind, he pushed all-in. On the big blind, Vida looked down to see KK and quickly called. Five blanks ended Bearman's night and streak of 5 straight cashes.

Unfortunately for Willis, another straight, this one not of the flush variety, would end his night prematurely. On the button, Vida called pre-flop and Willis declined the option. The flop came 635, and after a small round of betting we headed to the turn two-handed. The turn brought a 7, and Willis moved all-in. Vida called and flipped over 89, his 9-high straight narrowly edging Willis' (Q4) 7-high straight and sending Willis off in 5th place.

With the blinds capped at 50-100, action was sparse for awhile before the 3 standings leaders became involved in one of the biggest pots of the nights. In early position, Vida doubled the big blind. Clutch called from the small blind, and J-Mac, pot committed, made the call and pushed in his last 102 chips over the top. Vida and Clutch called and the flop brought 944. Vida bet another 200 and Clutch folded, leaving Vida and J-Mac in a showdown. J-Mac flopped A2 and Vida turned over 88. Blanks on the turn and river eliminated J-Mac in 4th place.

Shortly thereafter, a seriously short-stacked Edge found himself all-in pre-flop against Clutch, holding JJ. Edge flipped K9 and was eliminated in 3rd place when the board failed to pair his cowboy.

Vida started heads-up play with more than a 3-to-1 chip advantage and Clutch fought valiantly, but could not overcome such a deficit. A few short hands of heads-up play and Clutch moved all-in. Vida called and flopped AQ. Clutch was behind with KJ but had two live cards. The flop came AJ9, and the turn and river were blanks, giving Vida the win. He has now won 3 straight tourneys.

6th place – Bearman (1 point)

Monday, August 25th

Lacking intensity, drama, and even a name, Monday night's tournament was a short, mostly forgettable affair. 6 players gathered in the basement at 52 Irving for the event.

Pots in the 1st half hour were mostly small until a short-stacked Nick Loucks failed to improve on his A10 and fell to Willis' pocket 9s. The next competitor eliminated was Chris Lees, the early surprise of the tournament who had built a sizable stack of chips. Vida called Lees all-in move preflop with AK, and Lees (A10) did not receive any help from the board. Clutch, who folded a pair of 6's pre-flop, would have won the biggest pot of the night to that point if he would have stayed in.

Chris Fallica exited next after he re-raised Vida's bet, then called when Vida put him all in. Fallica flipped a pair of 5's, but Vida's KK held, giving him a sizable chip lead. Vida was then content to let Clutch and Willis participate in the next showdown, as Clutch moved all-in with 88 and was called by Willis (A10). The flop paired Willis' ace and ended Clutch's streak of consecutive cashes. Starting heads-up play, Vida had nearly a 2-1 chip advantage over Willis, but frittered it away over the next half-hour as the two traded small pots. After a short drink break, Vida, trailing in the chip count, won several consecutive pots, building a 5-1 chip lead quickly. On the final hand, the flop fell 224. Willis checked, Vida bet, and Willis called. The turn brought another 4, and Willis led off with a strong bet. Vida countered by putting Willis all-in, and Willis called. Vida flipped K4, for 4's full of 2's. Willis' (26) 2's full of 4's didn't hold up, and Vida took home the title in a tournament that lasted less than 2.5 hours. It was his 2nd consecutive win.

The only participant to move up or down on the leaderboard was Vida, who jumped up 6 spots to 2nd place with the win.

Jarrod Washburn Waiver Claim Classic

For the first time since April 2, there was a two-table tournament for the Jarrod Washburn Waiver Claim Classic at 52 Irving as 10 players decided they had nothing better to do on a beautiful Wednesday night in the summer time.

There were some early storylines. Dave Bearman was back, surprisingly without the Cockney/British/Scottish/Irish accent everyone thought he would have being out of the country for over a month. Newest researcher Greg Dohmann made his first trip to the 52 Irving Poker League, registering a quick 10 AB in his quest to get to the needed 50 for the year-end tournament. Vince Masi was back after taking a few tournaments off. He has to show up considering he won the previous 2-table tournament in April. And last but not least, the other storyline can be summed up in two words, Chris ... Lees.

The cards were drawn and it would be Masi, Bearman, Chris Fallica, J-Mac and Matt Willis heading upstairs while Dohmann, Lees, Clutch Renno, Yinz Conlon and Brett Edgerton were left to battle it out in the basement.

Unfortunately for Dohmann, his fate would be set much like the previous newcomers before him. With 10-8 suited, he would go all in against Renno, who had pocket threes. On the flop, Renno would trip his threes, but Dohmann received a spade and then another on the turn, leaving him one card away from the flush. However, a harmless club (written on the box score) would send Dohmann home. The good news for Dohmann -- he becomes the 22nd member in the 52 Irving Poker League, but his 1-for-10 score puts him in last place.

The upstairs table would claim the next victim. From the small blind, J-Mac went all in with pocket 10s. He was called by Masi, in the big blind, with pocket queens. The flop would eliminate J-Mac as a Queen came, sending J-Mac out with two points.

The tables would then be merged after the next player was eliminated and that came from the basement. Edgerton goes all in with K-3 and he was called by Conlon, who had a strong A-9 hole card set. The flop added to Conlon's lead as a nine came with two other meaningless cards. The turn would give Conlon the check as an Ace came, sending Edgerton out with three points.

Seven players would join the air-conditioned basement final table. And it wouldn't be long before the next player would be eliminated. Conlon raises with a strong pocket 6 pair. Lees came over the top with an all-in play, which Conlon called. The flop came K-K-10 -- no real help for Lees. However, an 8 on the turn gave Lees a flush draw, but a third King eliminated Lees, giving him four points, leaving him to nothing but watching the Red Sox game and analyzing the "cup of coffee" Edgar Renteria had with the Red Sox.

Some mixing and meddling would go on until Willis saw a chance to gain some chips with A-Q of hearts, prompting him to go all-in after a flop 52J with two hearts. Clutch called with a pocket-5 set. A five on the flop gave Renno trips, but two hearts gave Willis some hope. But the hope would be short-lived as an Ace and 6 of clubs would eliminate Willis with five points.

Conlon, involved in some interesting all-in scenarios earlier in the night, went all-in with pocket 8s (one of them diamonds. Masi, sensing some revenge from being eliminated by Conlon the last time he played, called with K-J. Much like the last time these two faced off with elimination on the line for one, the flop helped both players. K-J gave Masi two pair but the flop were all diamonds, giving Conlon a flush draw. Masi would finish off Conlon with two cards which were not diamonds, giving Conlon six points and keeping in seventh in the overall standings.

That would leave four players, one elimination away from cashing. Bearman and Fallica would battle it out with Bearman taking down Fallica, guaranteeing him a fourth straight cash in his first tournament since July 2.

The remaining three players would be guaranteed an extra point, but Bearman, Renno and Masi aren't going to just settle for that. Bearman tried to take advantage when a flop came A-K-6, so he went all in, even though he had J-8. Renno would call and would flip over A-K. A 2 on the turn was no help and a K on the river clinched another heads-up battle for Renno while giving Bearman nine big points.

Masi and Renno would be almost in a virtual tie for the lead when we had the hand that sealed our winner. Renno was holding a 220-chip lead when he went all-in with A-K. Masi called with K-9 suited diamonds. The flop turned a diamond. Masi's hand improved when another diamond came on the turn. Then a 10 of diamonds gave Masi a commanding lead with a flush.
After a few wins by Renno, he would go all-in with 8-5 and was called by Masi with his A-3. The flop came 6-3-K, all hearts. Another King would come on the turn, but a harmless Queen would give Masi his fourth win of the season and made him 2-for-2 in two-table tournaments.

Standings analysis:
-Clutch still owns the overall lead, but J-Mac's hold on second is slipping a little as he fell under .800 Wednesday.
-We have four players who have joined "The 700 Club". No they aren't best friends with Pat Robertson and they won't be appearing on the show anytime soon. Clutch, J-Mac, Masi and Bearman all have percentages of .700-or-better.
-The top 3 in wins represent the top-3 in percentages. The top 4 in cashes represent the top-4 in percentages.
-Paul Carr and Kenton Wong dropped one spot in the standings without playing. Ryan McCrystal was the only player to improve without playing.

July 29th Recap

Before we begin the next recap, a reminder that the next poker game will be Wednesday, Aug. 13th at 7:30 PM. GET IN!

8 players hopped in for the affair including one Ryan McCrystal who hadn't played much since before the NFL Draft. Joining McCrystal was roommate Brett Edgerton, Matt Willis, Kevin Conlon, Clutch, JMAC, Matt Ketaineck and the reigning champion Kenton Wong.

However the champion found rough waters as he was sent to the rail first. He was crippled when Clutch had KK vs his A7 of hearts. After the two-hearted flop came both players were all-in but Kenton could not catch the heart and was eliminated a hand later when three players called his all-in and he was out first.

A flop of J105 prompted an all-in by McCrystal and after some questionable deliberation Conlon called the all-in with AA and had Ryan dominated when he flipped over KJ. The turn and the river came blanks to send McCrystal home with a disappointing 7th place finish that would significantly hurt his Poker Batting Average.

Clutch (small) and Edge (big) were getting down in chips when Clutch moved all-in preflop and Edge called. Clutch flipped over A4 while Edge flipped over K10 to give him to live cards to stay alive. But a flop of AQ8 followed by two blanks sent Edge to the rail in 6th place.

It was shortly after this beat that one of the strangest hands in 52 Irving Poker League took place. With the blinds 30/60, Yinz called, JMAC called and Clutch checked his option in the big blind. In what appeared to be a fairly innocent flop of 775 had everybody checking around. A flop of a King, got the betting going as Yinz bet 60, JMAC called as did Clutch leading for some to believe we might have a blood bath happening. But another King hit on the river and after Yinz bet 100, JMAC was quoted as saying "I can't believe I'm going to have fold this hand" as he threw them near the muck. Clutch also folded and said "No wait until you see what I folded...". Yinz took down the pot in an apparent Kings full of Sevens full house. JMAC then showed his 55 for the group to see as he showed his frustration for flopping a full house. Clutch then chuckled as he showed his 75 as he had flopped a bigger full house that had the 2nd king not come out, he would have almost assuredly sent JMAC packing as neither would have been able to get away from the hand.

In the worst beat of the night, JMAC moved all-in AQ and Willis called with K10. After a great flop of Q36, JMAC was over an 85 percent favorite to double up but Willis caught runner-runner J9 to hit his straight to take the chip lead and sent JMAC home in 5th place.

With the blinds getting high and his frustation higher, Kevin Conlon made his worst read/play in his 52 Irving Poker career as he called an all-in made by Clutch with 106 of diamonds. Frustrated by Clutch stealing his blinds all night, Conlon figured he just might have Clutch beat but when Clutch flipped over AK, he was only a 38 percent favorite to stay alive but he had two live ones. Clutch was convinced he would take the proverbial card/cock in the ass but when the cards came 77384, Clutch got healthy in chips and Yinz was gone in 4th place.

At this point, Willis had a solid chip lead over Ketaineck and Clutch. A couple of wild swings led Ketaineck to taking over a solid chip lead and Clutch the small stack. At one point Clutch went all-in from the small blind with 25 of clubs and Willis called with AQ. Clutch got up and was ready to leave but a flop of 67J with two clubs gave Clutch some outs and then a turn of 4 gave him even more outs until a 5 on the river game him a pair living Clutch elated and Willis reeling.

Clutch would finish off Willis a few hands later when Willis went all-in with K2 spades and Clutch looked down at pocket rockets and made the easy call. Nothing helped Willis and he was sent to the rail in 3rd place.

It didn't take long for the fireworks to get started as Ketaineck and Clutch went heads-up and in less than 5 minutes, we had ending hand. Both players limped in and a flop of 1023 led Ketaineck to bet out 300 and Clutch raised to 700. Almost immediately Ketaineck went all-in and Clutch quickly called. Ketaineck thought Clutch was bluffing but he wasn't as he flipped over the top 2 pair in 103 leaving Ketaineck to draw to two outs as he flipped over 62. It didn't come and Clutch picked up his 10th win of the season.

52 Irving History Made With First Chop

With Clutch out of town on vacation, the turnout was smaller than normal. 6 players showed up, including Stu! After pre-gaming by watching Coming to America, the cards were in the air. After watching the blinds go up a couple of times, Stu got in a pot with J-Mac. Upon seeing a flop of Jh, 10s, 7c, Stu pushed the rest of his stack in. J-Mac deliberated for a couple minutes, but then called, showing the Ah7h. As luck would have it, running hearts would come Kamalakin Makinning Stu out in 6th place, and giving J-Mac the chip lead.
A couple of rounds later, Graphics Producer Matt Ketaineck, splashed his GP money around from the cut-off, moving all in. Kenton called from the small blind, having about 300 more chips than Ketaineck. J-Mac deliberated calling both players down, but eventually folded 8-8 face up. It was a tremendous fold as Kenton flipped over 2 black aces and was up against Ketaineck's Ad2d. The board was no help, and Ketaineck was drawing dead after the turn and out in 5th place.
Brett "Quads" Edgerton manuevered through a few hands and gained the chip lead, while the rest of the players saw their stacks dwindle. Edge then min-raised from first position. Willis and Kenton both folded and J-Mac called to see a flop. The flop came down 5c 10h 8h. J-Mac moved all-in and was insta-called by Edge who flipped over KdKh. J-Mac turned over 10c8c. The turn was a 7c, limiting Edge's outs. The river was another 8, giving J-Mac 8's full of 10's in a pot slightly over 800 chips.
Edgerton, now on the shortstack, moved all-in. Willis and Kenton folded and J-Mac nearly folded after peeking and seeing a 3. After doing due diligence and looking at his 2nd hole card, J-Mac called, flipping up pocket 3s. The flop brought nothing, and a 3 on the turn sealed the deal, eliminating Edge in 4th place.
Shortly after, Kenton raised from the button. After J-Mac folded, Willis pushed all in. Kenton called flipping over AQ, Willis showed JJ. This set up the battle of the T-shirts as Kenton and his Johnny Chan shirt were up against Willis, wearing a very solid Tecmo Bowl shirt. The flop came down Ad Kd 8h, leaving Willis needing one of 2 remaining jacks or running straight cards to re-gain the lead. The turn brought the 2d, giving Willis the second nut flush draw, unfortunately for him, Kenton held the Qd and had the nut flush draw in addition to a pair of aces. Only a J could keep Willis alive. The river was the 3 of diamonds, giving both players a flush, but it was not to be for Willis who finished in 3rd place.
This set up heads up play between J-Mac and Kenton, with Kenton holding a 2-1 chip lead at around 11:20 pm Eastern time. J-Mac got short on chips, but then doubled back up when Kenton's open-ended straight draw didn't hit. J-Mac slowly drew even, and then took a chip lead. With 1000 chips remaining, Kenton called J-Mac's all-in with KQo, J-Mac flipped up K-9. The KQ held up, giving Kenton a 2-1 chip lead again. The very next hand, J-Mac moved all in and Kenton called with KJo, J-Mac flipped up Ace baby, which held up, returning a 2-1 chip lead to J-Mac. Kenton's stack dwindled further until he held only 751 chips. At this point Kenton moved all-in and was called by J-Mac, who flipped AJ offsuit. Kenton flipped Big Slick, which held up and gave Kenton a 1502 to 1498 chip lead. At this point, we had played 2 hours and 40 minutes of heads up. The 2 players decided to chop the pot and then played out a best of 3 hands to see who would get the 2 extra standings points. After splitting the first 2 hands, Kenton flopped 2 pair with J5, and after J-Mac's gutshut failed on the river, Kenton was on his way home to write the recap.

JOSH HAMILTON SMACK-DOWN CLASSIC

Before we get started, according to last night's e-mail, the next event in the 52 Irving Poker League will be Thursday at 8:15 pm. Due to no title being out there yet, it will be referred to as the Art Linkletter House Party.

The 52 Irving Poker League got an unexpected game Monday night at the double-decker bachelor party, appropriately titled the Josh Hamilton Smackdown Blow-out. Neither of the honored guests sat down on the felt, but 8 of the league's finest gathered around the felt for a poker throwdown. No one knew the drama and inspiration that would follow.

Early in the action, it was All-Yinz Conlon betting on a flop of 10-7-3. Matt Ketaineck, the only other player in the hand, pushed out the rest of his chips and got an insta-call from Conlon. Ketaineck turned over A-10 for top pair-top kicker. Conlon showed pocket 7's and had Ketaineck drawing to 2 outs. The 9 of diamonds on the turn gave Conlon a Kamalakin-makin draw on the turn, and he hit it with the 4 of diamonds on the river, unnecessarily improving to a flush.

Play continued with 7 players for quite time until a big hand took replace. With Clutch and Nick Loucks already all-in, Kenton Wong looked down at pocket queens and made the no-brainer call. Clutch, the short stack, had A-J of clubs, Nick had A-5 of diamonds and had the other two players covered. The flop came out K-8-7, with 2 diamonds, giving Nick a flush draw. The turn 10 gave Clutch a straight draw. But Kenton's queens held up, with a blank on the river. Kenton had over 1,000 chips, Nick was crippled, and Clutch eliminated in 7th.

J-Mac, having nursed his dwindling chip stack long enough, pushed all in with pocket 8's. Kenton, from the big blind, was priced in with K-4. The flop was eye-opening, K-Q-Q. J-Mac gained a glimmer of hope on the turn with another queen, giving him one out to a chop with similar full houses. However, another king came on the river, giving Kenton kings full and left J-Mac playing the board.

Kevin Conlon was running short on patience and chips, when he pushed all-in with his pocket 5's. Kenton again made the call with pocket jacks, leaving Yinz hoping for a miracle. The board bricked out, and Kenton had knocked out his 3rd consecutive player and extended his chip lead even further.

With 4 players left, Kenton raised, and Nick committed the rest of his chips, getting a call from Kenton. Wong flipped over A-6, and Nick had a Q-9 of diamonds. Things were looking up when the door card was a queen, but an ace followed right behind on the flop. Another ace on the turn sealed the deal, and robbed the drama of a river 9, giving Nick two pair, and the 2nd-best hand.

Play was down to three players, with Kenton's monster stack dwarfing both those of Brett Edgerton and Matt Willis, both of whom quietly accumulated chips and wisely stayed away from Kenton. After laying down pocket deuces to Willis's all-in move (later revealed to be kings), Edge was barely afloat, and called Kenton's raise for the rest of his chips with K-3 of clubs. Kenton had a suited A-10, and a 5-6-8-9-8 board meant Kenton had knocked out his 5th straight player and gave him about a 3700-300 lead going into heads-up play.

52 Irving Poker was looking for a fairy tale experience, a heroic effort to inspire them in their day-to-day lives, and Matt Willis did his best not to disappoint. As expected, early heads-up play was an all-in fest, without many confrontations. Willis doubled up his meager chip stack once, and then got near even when his K-10 suited (proven time and time again to be nearly unbeatable) turned a full house. That led to the biggest hand of the tournament.
Kenton raised and Willis called to see a 4-J-8 flop. Willis liked the flop and pushed all-in, getting a call in record time from Kenton. Willis turned over 9-10 suited for an open-ended straight draw, and Kenton showed his bullets, a couple of aces. Kenton was a 2-1 favorite after the flop, but a turn 10 gave Willis 5 more outs, but left him as a 70-30 underdog. The river was paydirt, though, a queen gave Willis the straight, shorted out the brand new 52 Irving Cash-O-Meter and gave hope to the masses.

Now with his own dominating chip lead, Willis surrendered a couple of blinds, but then pushed all-in, getting a call from Kenton's A-10. Willis turned over 2-7 suited and laughed as his blind-steal came at a bad time, but with 2 live card left him only as a 63-36 underdog (1 percent chance of a chop). The deuce came as the first card out of the deck, and the rest of the board read 9-Q-4-8.

Church bells rang and choirs of angels sang down from above as Willis pulled off the greatest comeback in 52 Irving history, giving him his 2nd win of the season.

Ringo Starr "All About the Hits" Classic

Before we get started let's remind everyone that the "Jessica Simpson - Adam Foote Showdown" will be held Thursday, July 10, at 11 AM sharp... let's get there on time people!

Ok so the Ringo Starr Classic drew 8 participants on Monday night, pretty good showing if I say so myself. Tournament leader Dennis Renno was your host with Scott Randall, Kevin Conlon, Kenton Wong, Brett Edgerton, Matt Ketaineck, Tom McKean and Vince Masi your participants.

This tournament got underway without much fanfare as nearly all players passed around blinds and were pretty even money through the first hour of play. Our first big hand came as Kentaineck put Edgerton all in holding a nut flush.. Edge immediately called and to Ketaineck's dismay Edgerton pulled a 5's over 4's full house.. and somewhere cousin Joey was smiling. Edge was left to play another day, and Ketaineck suffered a major chip loss.

Ketaineck would soon regain his lost chips as he made the first knockout of the tourney. When Ketaineck raised before the blinds, Scott Randall the big blind decided to go all-in in hopes that Ketaineck was simply trying to steal the blinds. Matty K called and Randall's Q10 was left behind Ketaineck's A9.... when an Ace came on the flop that was all she wrote for Randall, but all was not lost as he was home in time to see his beloved Dodgers get a near perfect game from some Janpanese guy.... oh and Randall had to make the Mr. Gurgles run..

Next to hit the door was everyone's favorite NASCAR young gun Tom McKean... McKean and Yinz went head to head as Conlon raised with a AQ and McKean called with K7.. when the flop showed A5K, McKean went all in and Yinz called... nothing came on the turn or river and Yinz had his first victim of the night, but certainly not his last...

Next to go was Jenton Wong... who you might ask..oh wait yeah Kenton Wong.... Kenton got excited to see a pair of J's dealt his way.. he quickly went all in but ran head first into a call from Yinz who was holding pocket A's... nothing came on the table and Yinz had number 2... it was Kenton's second big loss to Conlon on the day as earlier an IM basketball game ended with Yinz team over Kenton's 93-17....

Yinz next victim was Vince Masi, but this time he needed a bit of luck... Masi calls all-in with pocket 9's and Yinz with the chip lead calls with A10 suited.....the flop produced 78J, leaving Yinz just a 9 short of the straight... the turn came 3 so no help, but on the river the only card that Yinz needed for the win came as a 9 gave him the win with a straight over Vince's trip 9's...

A short dinner break ensued with some Mr. Gurgles buffalo pizza, and then it was back to action... with Conlon again locked in... Edge dealt pocket J's went all in immediately, and a smiling Yinz called again, this time with pocket K's....the flop left no help and Yinz beat his second pair of J's on the night...

So with 3 people left in the game Yinz and Ketaineck with high chips and a short stacked Clutch who had grinded his was all night... the big hand came when Yinz got pocket J's and went all-in... Ketaineck called with A5 and when nothing came to Matty K's aid, Yinz took home the pot... Ketaineck was left with 53 chips and was shortly eliminated by Yinz...

So Clutch and Yinz were ready to battle as long as it would take for the final, but it would only take one hand....Yinz gets A9 on the first deal and goes all-in with a huge chip lead... Clutch (partially tired and knowing he needed to be up for a little M&M) decides to call with Q2 and nothing comes to help... Yinz gets his second win of the season and proclaim's his happiness that he was able to talk his wife into letting him play.... here are the points....

8th place - Randall (1 point)
7th place - Tom (2 points)
6th place - Kenton (3 points)
5th place - Masi (4 points)
4th place - Edge (5 points)

The Lindsay Lohan Skins Game

Seven players showed up on Wednesday night at 52 Irving and things got going - and close to on time, too!

As per usual, the action started off relatively slow, with chips being passed around but nothing overly dramatic happening. About an hour or so in, it was D-Rose on the relative short stack. He was in on the action and called a pre-flp raise from J-Mac. The flop was A/A/2 and D-Rose bet 50, J-Mac called. The turn was a Q and D-Rose bet 50 and J-Mac called yet again. When the river brought another Q, D-Rose moved all-in and J-Mac called, flipping over A-10. D-Rose's pocket 2's (and his flopped full house) were cracked by aces full of queens, which J-Mac got due to runner runner on the last 2 cards. D-Rose went to the rail in 7th place.

Soon after, Ketaineck was in a pot against J-Mac and the flop came J/8/4, with the 8 and 4 of spades. Matt bet 50 and J-Mac called, and then the turn was the 7 of spades. Matt moved all-in with a jack-high flush, but J-Mac had the king-high flush and the night was over with a 6th-place finish for Ketaineck, who was stuck wondering out he had lost when he flopped top pair and a flush draw…

Only a few minutes later, Kevin “Shortstack” Conlon moved all-in for 199 chips with A/4 and J-Mac again was willing to oblige with a call. J-Mac flipped over pocket 9’s and when no help came on the board, Conlon was done with a 5th-place finish after a frustrating evening when he just couldn’t seem to make a hand.

The run continued for J-Mac as shortly, it was Brett “Quads” Edgerton who was on the shortstack. McCallum moved all-in pre-flop as Brett was in the big blind, and Brett made a good call considering his position – and flipped over Q/10 of diamonds. J-Mac turned over J/J. The flop gave J-Mac another jack, but it was the jack of diamonds, and when the turn came 9 of diamonds, Edge was a diamond away from doubling up – but it was not to be. The river was the 9 of clubs, which gave J-Mac the full boat, and Brett the 4th-place finish.

The remaining players were J-Mac, Bearman and Willis. J-Mac had about 2,300 of the 3,500 chips on the table. Our resident NASCAR aficionado had been hanging around with a dwindled (but not crippled) stack for a while, and when he was shortstacked and out of a hand, he perked up:

J-Mac raised pre-flop, and Bearman re-raised. J-Mac, feeling good from the steamroller performance he had put forth so far, moved all-in over the top. When he was called immediately, he didn’t even need to see Bearman flip his cards over. But Bearman did anyway, and J-Mac saw his pocket queens were up against pocket aces. When an ace came on the flop, it was over and J-Mac’s massive chip lead was reduced to a small one.

With his opportunity to sneak into the money all but gone, Willis was forced to become the aggressor. A couple of all-in moves allowed him to gather some blinds, but eventually one of those all-ins would be called. That’s what happened when Willis went all-in with K/7 and was called by J-Mac’s A/8. The board fired 5 blanks and J-Mac knocked Willis out with ace high. Willis finished in 3rd place.

Going into heads up play, J-Mac held about a 2,000 to 1,500 chip lead over Bearman, and he improved upon that in the first several hands. But soon the cards got cold for the leader and Bearman’s aggressive raises began hammering away at the chip lead. By the time we were 45 minutes into heads up, Bearman had earned the chip lead and was going strong.

The key hand happened a little more than an hour into heads up, as Bearman raised 300 preflop and J-Mac called. The flop came A/Q/8 with no matching suits and Bearman led out with another 300 chip bet. J-Mac went over the top all-in and it was decision time for Bearman. Thinking things over for a few minutes, Bearman said, “If you have the Ace, you’ve got me… if you have anything else, I’ve got you.” Eventually, he decided not to tempt fate and after folding, exposed his K/Q. J-Mac followed suit by exposing his own K/Q and raked in the pot, recapturing the chip lead. After that the cards got hot for J-Mac again and his pre-flop raises helped him establish a fairly healthy chip lead again. Finally, about 90 minutes into heads up play, Bearman moved all-in from the small blind and J-Mac called with A/Q. Bearman flipped over Q/9 of spades, and needed either a 9 or a spade draw to stay alive. The flop was blanks, and the turn gave J-Mac his ace to clinch the win. Bearman finishes with his 3rd straight runner-up finish, and J-Mac get his 6th win of the season.

Brett Edgerton Classic (June 23rd)

BRETT EDGERTON CLASSIC (JUNE 23RD)
Please join the members of the 52 Irving Poker League for the Lindsay Lohan Skins Game on Wednesday, July 2nd at 7 ET.
The inaugural Brett Edgerton Classic drew a strong field of 7 players, including 3 of the league’s top 8 ranked players, to the bowels of 52 Irving on Monday evening. Tournament host Jason McCallum, David Rose, Matthew Willis, Chris Lees, Matt Ketaineck, and Brett Edgerton were joined briefly after the first chips hit the table by late arriver Jason Vida.
After a relatively uneventful first hour full of small raises and few showdowns, the betting and swings increased noticeably as the blinds climbed higher and higher. When Matt Willis raised 3 times the big blind before the flop, it represented one of the most aggressive moves to that point of the night. The table folded around to Chris Lees, who called quickly. A flop of 5-2-2 seemingly helped neither, and when the turn brought another 5, Willis moved all in and was called quickly by Lees, who triumphantly flipped over Q2 for a boat that dominated Willis’ KK. Fifth street brought no help for Willis, who was left short-stacked.
Willis was shortly joined at the bottom of the chip standings by the guest of honor himself, who found himself with very little to play for most of the night. When Brett moved all-in vs D-Rose, it looked like his night would end prematurely against Rose’s pocket 8’s. But luck intervened as the birthday boy caught a one-outer on the river to cripple D-Rose, who once again lost out on a large pot to a pair of 10’s.
Having rebuilt his stack, Willis again squared off against Lees for the night’s biggest pot to that point. A raise of 200 from Willis didn’t scare off Lees with his 8-6 suited, and when the board paired his 8 and the players checked down the rest of the hand, Lees’ 8’s had busted Willis’ AK. Unmoved by his improbably victory over big slick with 8-6, Lees exclaimed that the preflop raise of 200 would usually have caused him to fold, but in this case, "they were suited." For his bravado, Lees earned a commanding chip lead, which he would use to knock out D-Rose shortly after. After more than 2 hours and one truly bad beat, D-Rose had nothing to show for his efforts and exited in 7th place.
He would soon be joined by Matt Willis. After Brett Edgerton moved all-in with less than the big blind, he was called by Vida and Willis, who himself made a small raise on the big blind to put himself all-in. The three-way pot tripled up Brett and Vida outlasted Willis for the two-way pot, sending Matt away with a 6th place finish. Still short-stacked, Brett moved all-in with KQ soon thereafter, and lost out to Vida’s pocket 3’s in a coinflip. A fifth-place finish would be the result for Mr. Edgerton on his own inaugural event.
Down to four players, Lees, Vida, and Ketaineck all held sizable chip leads over J-Mac. After pairing the J in his hand on the flop, J-Mac moved all-in and was called by Vida and his pocket Q’s. The turn and river would bring no help, and J-Mac was eliminated in 4th place.
After seeing his once insurmountable chip lead vanish over the past 90 minutes, Lees pushed all-in against Ketaineck after a flop of K-Q-Q. With K-Q in his hand, the decision was simple for Matty K, who called and sent Lees home in third place, his best finish in a 52 Irving tourney this season.
The heads-up match between Ketaineck and Vida was long and filled with it’s share of peaks and valleys, as the two players traded big pots and the chip lead for the next hour. With a chip lead of approximately 3-1, Ketaineck (AK) quickly called Vida’s preflop all-in raise. When Vida flipped over A7, the issue seemed to have been decided and both players began to get up from the table. But those actions were halted when the flop brought a 7 and put on permanent hold when the turn brought another, giving Vida the improbable victory and evening the chip count. After more than 90 minutes of heads up play, Vida, with a 2-1 chip lead, put Ketaineck in pre-flop. Ketaineck called and flipped A8. Vida’s pocket 4’s would hold up in the ensuing race, however, giving Ketaineck a runner-up finish and Vida his first victory of the season.
Do the back-to-back victories by Wong and Vida represent a changing of the guard in the 52 Irving Poker League? Will the next tournament produce a third-straight first-time champion? Can Lees build on the momentum of his third-place finish? Will the grueling heat and humidity of the 52 Irving Arena force players to change their strategy as we enter the summer months? We’ll find out the answer to all these questions and more at the Lindsay Lohan Skins Game next Wednesday at 7 ET. Hope to see you there.

- Avg Pre-Tourney Rank of Top 3 finishers: 16.33

TUPAC SHAKUR SHOOTOUT (JUNE 16TH)

Of course as you know, before you can read the recap, we need to announce the next tournament. The next tournament will be Monday, June 23rd at 8 PM!

We had a big turnout at Irving despite a massive storm that was dropping sideways rain. Nine people showed up to battle it out at the 1st Annual Tupac Shakur Shootout. Two More came to hang out and bask in the festivities (Justin Ray and Harold Shelton).

Chris Lees jumped out to the early chip lead after he made a couple of flushes in large hands. Chips were being pushed around the table and eventually Matt Ketaineck got short on chips and pushed with the Q7 of hearts. He was called by Scott Randall who held Ace-10. Scott hit 2 pair on the flop when the board came down A109. Ketaineck failed to improve on the turn and river and was the first one out.

Shortly after, with four to a straight on board (9, 10, J, 8) Chris Lees moved all in. After thinking it over for a bit, David Rose called with QJ, giving him a straight. Lees had a lot of outs as he flipped over pocket 9's and needed the board to pair to make a boat. The river brought a harmless 6 and Chris was the second one out of the shootout.

Matt Willis, short on chips pushed with AJ offsuit and was called by Clutch with A10. Clutch didn't improve and was now the short stack as Willis doubled up. Shortly after in the most exciting hand of the night Clutch saw his KJ go up against Randall's AK. A king came on the flop, but Clutch was still drawing to just 3 outs as he was outkicked. The turn brought exactly what Clutch needed as a Jack dropped. But a miracle ace on the river provided the redraw Willis needed to eliminate Clutch in 7th place.

Next to get short on chips was J-Mac, who pushed with a Q10. After deliberating for a while, Vince Masi called him down with QJ offsuit and had him dominated. The flop came down 9JJ giving Vince trips and J-Mac an open-ended straight draw. The turn was a deuce and the river a 10, so Vince eliminated J-Mac in 6th place.

A round or so later, Vince raised in late position. DRose moved all in and was called immediately by Masi who flipped up a pair of kings. David held A9. The flop was 468 and Rose still needed an Ace to take the lead in the hand. The turn wasn't an ace, but a 7, giving 8 more outs. A river queen was no help, and Vince had quite a large stack at this point as he eliminated DRose.

Now down to 4 players, Scott Randall was the short stack and from the button moved all in with KJ. He was called by Kenton in the small blind who held A9. An ace came on the flop and Randall's hand did not improve as he busted on the bubble.

Down to the final three, with a large chip lead, Kenton moved all in and was called by both blinds. Vince held a Q4 and Matt Willis had A6. Wong had pushed with pocket 3s, but was definitely not a favorite to hold up as he faced 4 overs. The flop came 7, 10, 9. The turn brought an ace giving Willis a strong lock on the hand and eliminating Masi, the river paired the board and Willis survived to move into heads up play.

On the 2nd hand of heads up, Kenton moved all in from the small blind and was called by Willis. Unfortunately for Matt, Wong had his 85 dominated with his Q5. When a Q came on the flop, Willis was in trouble. The runner-runner straight didn't come and the last man standing at the Tupac shootout was Kenton, representing the West Coast.

Here's how the points shook out:
9th place: Ketaineck (1 point)
8th place: Lees (2 points)
7th place: Clutch (3 points)
6th place: J-Mac (4 points)
5th place: DRose (5 points)

BOB HOPE CLASSIC (POKER STYLE)

Of course before we begin, a reminder that the next tournament is Thursday, June 5th at 11am SHARP....GET IN!

For the night portion of the doubleheader, we had 5 players...Randall, DRose, Edge, Clutch and Vinny Masil. The chips started flying fast and furious as raising was the name of the game on this night! Right away Vince crippled Edge as they both had a flush but Vin's King high flush beat Edge's queen-high (in what would be a tough theme of the night for Edge). Eventually Edge would be all-in with AQ and Randall would call with AK. The flop came Q73, giving Edge the huge advantage and when a jack hit on the turn, Edge was an 84% percent favorite to stay alive. But Randall hit one of his 7 outs when the King hit and Edge was out early in a rare early exit for Edge.

Vince Masi would be the next one to put all his chips in the middle and DROSE would call with about 250 more chips than Masil. Vince flipped over a 44 and it was strictly a race situation when DROSE flipped over A10. Vince would double-up because DROSE's hand did not improve. On the very next hand Clutch sensing the possibility that DROSE might be on tilt, pushed all-in in front of David Rose and he immediately called. Clutch flipped over AJ and DROSE again flipped over A10. The board came three 8's and some junk and DROSE would be out in 4th place.

That left Clutch as the clear chip leader because he had been using the strategy of raising to 80 almost every hand. The power of 80 would go away as Clutch would double up both Randall and Vince Masi and it left the table fairly balanced. Vince Masi would take the chip lead when he continued to play aggressive and take chips from both Randall and Clutch.

Clutch went all-in with Randall in the big blind. Randall made the great call with AJ and Clutch sheepishly flipped over A10. Randall was in good position to double-up but in a remarkable run that has lasted nearly the whole season, Randall was to the rail by Clutch when a 10 showed up in the window on the flop and there was no Jack to be found.

This left Clutch heads up with Vince but Clutch had about a 2-1 chip lead to start the heads-up play. Remarkably everybody left when heads-up play started so it was just Vince and Clutch chatting it up. Right off the bat Vince would turn the tables on Clutch and made a great play with Aces. He just called the big blind and when Clutch looked down at JJ, he went all-in and Vince quickly called. The board did not help Clutch and Vince now had the 2-1 chip lead. Neither player made any big moves, basically one player would go all-in the other would flow. Vince continued to lean on Clutch but Clutch eventually would start fighting his way back. After about 40 minutes of heads-up play, Clutch got back to 1150 chips (compared to Vince's 1350). Clutch would push all-in with A9 and when Vince looked down at AK he quickly called. However, the Clutch snakebites would continue as Clutch nailed a 9 on the turn and would take all but 200 of Vince's chips. Clutch would take Vince out a hand later when Vince went all-in with K8 vs Clutch's A10. Clutch would hit a 10 on the flop and spike an ace on the river as he lived the charmed life during the Bob Hope Classic.

Final show from the Bob Hope:
5th place: Edge (1 point)
4th place: DRose (2 points)
3rd place: Randall (3 points)
2nd place: Vince Masi (5 points,4 for 2nd, 1 for cash)

2008 LaToya Jackson Open

6 players convened at 52 Irving for the inaugural LaToya Jackson Open - the first tilt of a day-night doubleheader. The nightcap of the doubleheader will be recapped soon, but for your scheduling convenience, the next event - The Kenny G Classic - will be Thursday at 11AM SHARP. Get in.

The action started relatively slow as chips were passed around at a moderate pace for the first 45 minutes of play, but before long we had our first player to the rail...

C-Lees got into a pot with the chip leader Bearman and after a flop of Ad4d9c, Bearman decided to push and have the NASCAR warrior make a decision for all his chips. C-Lees saw no caution flag on his way to the finish line and made the call with pocket 6's. When Bearman flipped over A/Q, C-Lees needed a 6 to stay alive. No 6 came on the turn or river and C-Lees got a DNF - engine troubles...

Bearman was a pretty solid chip leader at this point, and Kevin "All Yinz" Conlon was stuck as the short stack. When he got dealt an A/3 he decided it was time to go all in, but J-Mac was up to the task and made the call with A/J. The board was all blanks, and Conlon was sent to the sidelines, dreaming about the Kamalakin Makin that did not come to pass...

A short time later we had the most memorable hand of the LaToya Jackson Open. Chris Fallica, who shockingly had avoided the weekly Kamalakin Makin bend-over, was short-stacked and went all-in. Bearman called with a healthy chip chip stack, and he was followed with a call by Matt Willis, who had silently moved into the chip lead. The flop came J/J/K and Bearman went all-in. Willis called pretty quickly and flipped over his A/K. But Bearman turned over A/J and Willis was dead to a King... Fallica, who started this whole mess, was left with an Ace, a nine and his racing forms in his hand. It was off to the horsies and the lazyboy for everybody's favorite gambler, who finished 4th as Bearman took a large chip lead by nearly tripling up.

Willis, who had been crippled by the previous hand, caught A/Q on the next deal and went all in. J-Mac, needing only 50 more to call from the big blind, made the call with A/6 and was dominated. The flop gave J-Mac a 6 - and so did the turn. Willis was done in by the mark of the beast and was left wondering if there was a God after going from a healthy stack to the rail in consecutive hands... consecutive hands in which he had A/K and A/Q...

We got down to heads up between J-Mac and Bearman, as the chips were relatively even to start things off. Bearman was wearing J-Mac down as the 11PM SC meeting was looming closer. J-Mac slowly waited for just one good hand to go all-in with, but the cards were cold. Whenever he tried to bluff, Bearman deftly went over the top and forced the fold.

When J-Mac caught a K/5 suited and the flop came 5/7/Q, he decided to go all-in after Bearman led out. Bearman eventually laid down his hand, which he later disclosed to be Q/2. This hand still left J-Mac at about a 750 chip deficit, but the next hand would turn the tide. J-Mac got pocket 3's and went all-in, and Bearman called with K/J of spades. The very first card on the flop was a 3, and J-Mac doubled up and took the chip lead with his set.

For a little bit, the chips were going back and forth with no big pots, as neither player could get a big hand. When Bearman asked dealer C-Lees for better cards, he was told "You'll get what I give you." Well, shortly thereafter, he was given J/10 and moved all-in from the small blind. J-Mac looked down at pocket Kings and it was a no-brainer. The flop came 8/7/6, leaving Bearman a gut-shot straight draw. But the turn was an Ace and the river paired Bearman's Jack - but it was not enough to overcome the Cowboys. J-Mac finishes 1st for his 5th win and 10th cash. Bearman's cash was his 4th, and he comes just shy of becoming the 6th multi-tournament winner at 52 Irving.

May 22nd Recap

Before we get to the recap...The next tournament(s) will be a day-night doubleheader on Thursday, May 29th. The first tourney will start promptly at 11am and the nightcap will occur at 7:45pm. GET IN! There are plenty of you who can play!!

What Matt Ketaineck asks for, Matt Ketaineck gets! Nah, just joking but sitting at work Thursday afternoon, Ketaineck inquires about the possibility of poker happening and within minutes Kenton Wong, Edge, Randall and Clutch agreed to play setting up an unprecedented 3rd tourney in 4 days for the 52 Irving Poker League and for just the second time in league history, a match was played outside the confines of 52 Irving as Brett graciously hosted the tourney at 80 Queen street. To conclude the upset them, Jeremy Lundblad also agreed to make his 2nd career appearance in league play.

Without question, this was the quickest tourney in league history as the chips flew fast and furious in the early going. Clutch took about 70 percent of Randall's chips within the tourney's first 10 hands when he flopped a straight and when he hit aces up. Then Ketaineck got into the mix and took some chips off of Kenton and Edge as Clutch and Ketaineck established themselves as the early chip leaders.

Incredibly, these two would get into the first all-in tussle with the blinds at just 4 and 8! Everybody had folded to Ketaineck who was in the small blind and he raised to 28. Clutch, in the big blind, called. The flop came 356, with two spades. Ketaineck bet out 50 and Clutch raised to 125 total. Ketaineck then raised it to 300 total and Clutch went all-in. Ketaineck wasted no time in calling. Ketaineck flipped over 77 (with one spade) and Clutch flipped over J4 of spades, giving him both the flush draw and the open-ended straight draw. Clutch was about a 55 percent favorite and when the 2 hit on the turn it gave Clutch the straight. When a 4 did not hit on the river, Ketaineck was gone and within 25 minutes of the tourney starting, Clutch had half the chips and it started a theme for the evening.

Not too long after sending Ketaineck to the rail, Clutch would call Randall's all in with pocket 10's. Randall showed AK of clubs. The flop came 59J with two clubs. Despite trailing in the hand, Randall was a 54% favorite to stay alive with a plethora of draws. In an effort to reverse-jinx their hands Randall got up and put his jacket on and Clutch counted out the 161 chips that Randall had left and put that much in Randall's stack. Non-clubs 3 and 9 would fall on the turn and river and Randall was sent to the rail in 5th place.

Kenton would be the next one to get into a race with Clutch. Kenton would go all-in with AQ of hearts and Clutch would call with 77. No card higher than an 8 fell and Kenton would go out in 4th place.

Lunblad, Edge and Clutch would play 3-handed for a little bit as they tried to survive the Clutch on-slaught of big-stack poker. When Clutch raised to 150, Lundblad would go all-in. Clutch thought for a moment as Lunblad had over 400 chips. Clutch decided to ride his luck streak and would call with 77. Lundblad flipped over AK and another race was on. An Ace fell on the flop and no 7 would come for Lundblad as Clutch won his 4th race in a row!

Clutch and Edge started heads up with 6-1 chip lead. Clutch would extend the lead to 2800-200. At this point Edge went all-in with A9 and to Clutch's surprise it would be no race situation as he flipped over QQ. But a little of Clutch's luck would be lost as Edge hit a 9 on both the flop and river to double-up. Upon seeing the river 9, Clutch jumped and in doing so actually cracked one of 80 Queen Streets chairs. Upon further inspection, the chair is still usable...

Clutch would finish Edge off a little later when Edge went all-in with J5 clubs and Clutch called with Q3. A queen and two clubs hit on the flop but a couple of blanks hit on the river and Clutch capped off the three tournament week with three cashes and two wins.

6th place - Ketaineck - 1 point
5th place - Randall - 2 points
4th place - Kenton Wong - 3 points

2nd place - Edge - 6 points (5 for 2nd, 1 bonus for cashing)

May 21st Recap

We had 7 players for the Wednesday morning affair including two newcomers. Kevin Hines from Elias played for the first time as did Intern Tom McKean. The other five included Clutch, JMAC, Willis, Yinz and Vince Masi.

Kevin Hines wasted no time getting in the mix as he was involved in the first out. But he avoided the first time jinx and even knocked out Vince Masi. After a flop of KQ6, Vince went all-in and Hines quickly called. Hines flipped over K6 while Vince showed K10 and when no help came, Vince was sent on the lunch run to Wings Over.

Willis would be the next player to go as he was getting shortstacked and he went all-in preflop and Yinz quickly called. Willis showed 55 while Yinz flipped over JJ. As the flop was being turned over the crowd could see a 5 but there was also a Jack underneath. Needing the case 5 to come, Willis was sent packing and Yinz spiked the case jack for fun.

Tom McKean and Yinz would battle in the next big hand. Yinz raised to 200 preflop and McKean called. After a flop of 1044, McKean went all-in and Yinz quickly called. Yinz showed QQ and McKean was behind with AK. Blanks came on the turn and river and McKean would be out 3rd in a respectable finish for his first time. Quick note, there were rumors that McKean was scouting out the players for his high school classmate Alok who will join the department in August. Obviously Alok has all the numbers down with his terminal degree in statistics but if he gets our tendencies down, he could have a big late-season run!

With 4 players left and the blinds 50 and 100, the chips were flying all over the table but they seem to go in a circle and not end up in Clutch's stack. So down to 400 in chips, Clutch went all-in blind under the gun. Hines and JMAC folded but Yinz in the big blind threw in the extra 300 with JQ suited against the blind hand. Clutch flipped over 46 offsuit. When the flop came Q79, with two spades, Yinz was a 91 percent favorite to knock Clutch out but the turn came a 4 of spades to give Clutch a 30% chance of moving on and when the K of spades fell, Clutch had hit a Kamalakin Makin and had doubled up to stay alive.

Clutch would then knock out JMAC shortly thereafter when JMAC went all-in with A4 and Clutch had AK in the big blind. JMAC did not improve and he was done in 4th place.
Kevin Hines who was all over the place in terms of chip count would get very healthy when Yinz would go all-in with 55 and Hines called with KK. When Yinz didn't hit anything he was gone in 3rd place.

This left Kevin with about a 3-2 chip lead over Clutch. The two would play fairly conservative for about a half-hour as Clutch struggled to stay alive. He would hit a few big hands that eventually gave him the chip lead. Time was getting short for Kevin Hines as he needed to get to work to help Baseball Tonight figure out the shortest tenure in a poker tournament (only to find out that fellow co-worker Rob Tracy was tied at 1 hand...)

In the final hand Clutch went all-in and Kevin reluctantly called with K9. Clutch showed AQ and when the Ace hit on the turn, Clutch had won but Elias vastly improved their standing...

May 19th Recap

Five players gathered on Monday for an intimate game of poker at 52 Irving, with hopes of seeing the return of Kamalakin Makin. They were not disappointed.

The game moved slowly at first, with chips gradually shifting around the table. Chris Fallica lost a chunk to Paul Carr when Carr flopped a set of aces, and Brett Edgerton also passed a good portion of his chips to Carr. With Edgerton virtually all-in in the big blind, Fallica moved his slightly larger stack all in from the button, and Carr called without looking from the small blind. This set up an epic showdown between Edge's 74, Carr's 63, and Fallica's monstrous K8. The flop came 10-6-5, giving Carr the lead, but both others with plenty of outs. The turn was a meaningless deuce, but the river brought a seven. It wasn't quads for Edgerton, but it was enough to triple him up and knock Fallica out to Carr's mighty 6-3.

Edge doubled up through Clutch with A4 vs AQ, hitting a four on the flop. Clutch got his revenge shortly thereafter. The same two were again all-in preflop, this time Clutch with A8 to Edge's suited AK. The flop showed an eight, giving Clutch the lead, but also featured two hearts, giving Edge a flush draw. The final two cards blanked, and Edge's day was done in 4th.

JMAC had been largely quiet, plagued with slightly above average hands like KT and pocket fours. He finally made his stand by going all in over Carr's raise while holding KQ. Carr quickly called with a pair of tens, and the race was on. The board brought little drama, with no cards above a nine, and JMAC's frustrating day died in 3rd.

At this point, you may be wondering, "Where is the promised Kamalakin Makin?? I'M READING THIS FOR THE KAMALAKIN MAKIN!!" Patience, young grasshopper.

JMAC's exit left only Carr to stop Clutch from winning his 9235th consecutive tournament. Fortunately, Carr had a 2-1 chip advantage when heads-up play began. The two jabbed at each other for some time, with nothing drastic happening. With the blinds at 40-80, Clutch had a little fun, blindly pushing his remaining 800 or so chips in pre-flop. Carr eagerly peeked at his cards, but a ten and a five weren't enough to gamble. A few hands later, Clutch again went all-in, this time after looking. Carr called with A8, giving Clutch with 99 a 70% chance to take the chip lead. The board came 6-7-2 with two clubs, eliciting a disappointed smirk from Carr. But the turn brought drama, with the eight of clubs, pairing Carr's 8, giving him four to the ace-high flush and 13 cards to win. Kamalakin Makin reared its head on the river, revealing the three of clubs and giving Carr his 2nd win of the season. Clutch could only laugh, appreciating the grandeur that is Kamalakin Makin and knowing that he would soon be back to take another crack at first place.

5th place - Chris Fallica - 1 point
4th place - Quads Edgerton - 2 points
3rd place - JMAC - 3 points
2nd place - Clutch Renno - 5 points (4 for 2nd, 1 bonus for cashing)
1st place - Paul Carr - 7 point (5 for 1st, 1 bonus for cashing, 1 bonus for win)

No change at the top of the standings, although Clutch crept closer to JMAC with his runner-up finish. The biggest shakeup came in the middle, where Carr jumped four players into 7th, while Edgerton's failure to get quads dropped him two spots. Fallica slipped a spot, but more importantly, he qualified for the Year-End Bonanza by reaching 50 at-bats.

May 14th Recap

The 1st order of business as usual is to announce the next game. They say you can't have too much of a good thing, and we at the 52 Irving Poker League agree, therefore for the 3rd week in a row we will have two games next week. In looking at the schedule we have decided to go with the same set we had this week. The very next game will take place Monday, May 19 at 7:45 PM. As always be there on time or risk seeing your stack blinded by those who are punctual. The 2nd game next week will take place Wednesday, May 21 at 11:00 AM SHARP! This night - day doubledip has been a breath of fresh air to the league and we are keeping it going.

Now to the reason you are all reading this… Wednesday's action. On a beautiful and sunny 75-degree day, 8 people gathered in the basement of 52 Irving. There were laughs, tears, and a few chicken sandwiches, but because Chris Fallica was not in attendance, there were no KAMALAKIN MAKINS.

The action began fairly quickly in this one. After just a few hands, 3-time winner Vince Masi decided to push all-in with a K-Q suited. Kevin "All Yinz" Conlon decided to call with his pocket queens. JMAC who had thrown a smaller raise in earlier decided to get out of the way and we had our first heads up. It turned out to be a dud with nothing coming on the table and Masi was left to ponder where and when to make the lunch run.

Play lasted for at least another hour with chips being passed around the table. Both defending champion Matt Willis and "Clutch" Renno were left somewhat shortstacked when both decided it was just about time to get the party going. Willis was the first to move as he went all in with his K-K pair. David Bearman, who at this time was the chip leader, decided that he would call with his A-8. It looked as though Willis would be doubled up after nothing came to help Bearman through the turn. But the vaunted river threw an A to Bearman and he eliminated Willis with the high pair.

"Clutch" didn’t wait much longer before making his all-in move as he was left as the table's short stack. Clutch drew K-10 suited and decided to move in. Kenton "the Asian Sensation" Wong called with his AQ. When nothing came on the table, Clutch was left defeated to the high card. Its like Pidto says, "he's never been clutch when I needed him" and Dennis was the third member out.

The three amigos left to make a lunch run while play continued at the table. Things began to get interesting when Jason Vida, shortstacked at the time, moved all-in with a pair of 3's. Conlon called with an Q-J and JMAC also called with K-Q of clubs. The flop came with three diamonds, both Conlon and JMAC checked. The turn card fell (another diamond) and Conlon had caught the straight 8-Q. Yinz put the rest of his chips in forcing JMAC to fold. Yinz looked to walk away with a huge pot, but the river card through yet another diamond, and Vida and Yinz split the pot with a flush on the table.

Not long after that play we would eliminate our 4th player. Kenton, dealt a pair of 10's, moved all in pre-flop. Yinz immediately calls with his own pocket pair A-A. The flop brought Yinz another Ace and he looked to be in pretty good shape heading to the turn. When the turn brought yet another Ace, the death blow was dealt to the "Asian Sensation" and he was eliminated by Yinz' quad aces.

At this point our boys were back from Wings Over and we enjoyed the pleasantries of buffalo chicken in the mid afternoon. It was a short break, however, and four players returned for the home stretch.

The return to the tables brought the return of Bearman, who was bringing the thunder all day. Bearman had begun to watch his chip lead slip away and decided to push all in with K-9. Vida called him with an A-9 and we went to the flop with Bearman holding a "live one". When Bearman caught a K on the on the turn, he crippled Vida, leaving Jason with the shortstack and Bearman was back in action.

The shortstack did not stop Vida from making a strong comeback as the Philly native went all in and was called by fellow Keystone state native Yinz. It was a classic Western PA vs Eastern PA showdown, but this one went to the East side as Vida's two-pair beat Yinz top pair. Vida had doubled-up and was back in the game.

The PA state war was not finished however, as Yinz would get his revenge just a short time later. Vida slow-played his pocket A's and called Conlon's big blind of Q-7 to get to the flop. When two Q came on the flop, Yinz raised and was called by Vida, still slow playing his huge pocket pair. The turn came with a 7 and Yinz had the full house. Yinz raised two-hundo in hopes of milking more chips from Vida. When Jason came back with an all-in call, Yinz was more than eager to oblige. Vida was surprised to see the house Yinz had and was eliminated. Yinz had now eliminated three players and won the battle of PA.

3 players remained with JMAC the chip leader, Yinz in second and Bearman back to the shortstack. The former Gator drew pocket 3's and went all-in. JMAC debated for several minutes before deciding to call with his pocket 7's. Nothing came on the flop, but you could sense something in the air as the turn came. Kenton Wong, who was dealing and had been handing out bad beats all day, dropped a 3 on the turn, giving Bearman the win.

This left an interesting position as all 3 players remaining were very close in chip count. Yinz held a slight advantage over the newly healthy Bearman, but JMAC was not far behind. The two R-2's would soon lock horns again, this time with JMAC making the first move. With an A-K, JMAC raised pre-flop. Bearman, not messing around, comes back with an all-in showing his pair K-K. When nothing came on the table to help, 52 Irving points leader JMAC was eliminated in third place, just missing an opportunity to become the first player with 10 total cashes.

And then there were two. The final pairing was an interesting one, as Yinz and Bearman went heads up for the fist time. For those of you who worked on Tuesday night, you may remember the following exchange in the research room.

Bearman: "Yinz you playing tomorrow?"
Yinz: "Yes, I am in."
Bearman: "Good that’s $20."
Edge: "Yinz tell him to look at the scoreboard."

Clearly, Kevin "All Yinz" Conlon would be using this as bulletin board material for the final. There was a lot of action between the final two, who played for over an hour before a winner was decided. It was not for a lack of trying, however, as both went all-in on numerous occassions. The final pair actually went heads up with all-in calls on four separate occassions before a winner was crowned. There was no documentation of a few of the hands, so lets just say it went like this.

Bearman entered the final as the chip leader, but doubled up Conlon when Yinz' A-K drew a K on the flop, and Bearman's A-9 was left in a loss. This brought the chip count a bit closer.

Conlon then crippled Bearman with a hand that no one can remember, but it left Bearman with just over 400 in chips and Yinz in a great position.

But, like they always say, you can't keep a good Gator down, as Bearman would double-up as his pocket 4's beat Yinz pocket 9's when a 4 came on the turn.

That left Bearman with about 1,500 chips before Yinz delivered his final knockout blow. Bearman calls all-in with a Q-J, and Yinz debates before calling with A-6. When the flop threw a Q to Bearman, Yinz was deflated as he thought about another potential 2nd-place finish. The turn left him no happier as a 7 came. But as was the trend of the day, Yinz got his A on the river and left a stunned Bearman in 2nd place.

So, for the 2nd consecutive tournament we have a 1st-time winner, as Yinz picks up his 1st ever tournament victory.
